MARKS OF A TRUE SERVANT

Philippians 2:22

Part Three

In this final pen pulpit on “Marks of a True Servant” we will look at the fact that a true servant has a dependable life.

Paul writes in verse 22, “But you know of his proven worth, that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father.”

Timothy’s life is a matter of record.  The Philippians were aware of this.  They were not only aware of what he had accomplished but that he had stood the test.  The word for “proven character” is a noun indicating the process and results of testing.  This word describes the process of refining gold.  In the fire the dross is removed and only the gold remains…only the authentic stands the test.

Jesus Christ was tested in the wilderness.  His identity and capabilities are confirmed in the process – not left with questions.  The believers; faith is confirmed and refined through stress factors (I Peter 1:7).  A man’s commitment in ministry is tested through the crucible of experience.

Timothy’s life grew out of a discipleship situation v.22b.

1. Paul led him to Christ (I Timothy 1:2).

2. He taught him in the things of Christ (II Timothy 1:13;

    3:14-17).

3. He included Timothy in a joint service for Christ.

Timothy had the direct influence of Paul’s good example.

Timothy had the opportunity to minister – not just spectator discipleship – not just “watch what I do and how I minister – but “minister alongside of me.”  Timothy was made to feel a part of the ministry.  Note Paul’s expository introductions in II Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians, First and Second Thessalonians, Philemon and Timothy.  Paul’s dependability rubbed off on Timothy.  Jesus said “a disciple will be like his teacher” (Matthew 10:24, 25).

To summarize what we have studied - What are the marks of a true servant of God?

  A Submissive Spirit

  A Shepherds Heart

  A Dependable Life.

However, you don’t have to be a pastor, missionary or full time, fully supported servant to demonstrate these qualities.  As a Christian you can be a submissive, concerned and dependable individual wherever you are.  God bless!
